I’ve read articles from a global point of view, as well as form USA and NATO’s point of view. Let me attempt an answer from Afghanistan’s point of view.
The Afghans are fiercely against any form of foreign occupation and love their independence. It’s crazy enough but Afghanistan gained it’s independence in 1919! They fought against the Soviets and pushed them out and now the Americans have been forced out of their land. In a boarder sense, the takeover will mean Afghans ruling Afghans.
The Taliban are overwhelmingly Pashtuns and Pashtuns account for 42% amongst the ethnic groups. The denial to include other ethnic groups within the autocratic Govt will lead to rebellions against the Taliban, which will further divide the already fractured Afghan society
The Tajiks, the second largest ethnic group comprising of 27% of the total population are already in arms against the Taliban under the leadership of Amrullah Saleh and Ahmad Massoud. It’s been widely reported that Tajikistan is providing arms and intelligence to the resistance groups. The Sunni Taliban, during their 1990s rule massacred Shia Hazara people(9%) but this time around, Iran bring a regional power is guaranteed to play a pivotal role.
The infighting between the hardliners and moderates amongst the Talibans, combined with threats from ISIS-K and presence of Pak-based terror groups( supported by ISI) will further destabilize the country and might prove to safe haven for terrorism.
Woman rights are something that is a major area of concern with the Taliban takeover. The open objectification of women and suppression of their rights is gaining momentum despite the tall promises made to the international community.
Apart from Pakistan and Qatar, no other OIC nation has granted recognition to the Taliban Govt, unlike the 1990s where UAE and Saudi Arabia recognized the then Taliban govt. This is a clear indication that aid will not be served on a platter and Taliban has to work hard within international guidelines if it is to survive.
The most immediate affect of the takeover is the complete destruction of the democratic institutions within the country. Every institution will be governed under Sharia law. A ban on sports and forms of entertainment might be observed in the upcoming days.
For Afghanistan to survive as a country, it’s important for the Taliban to rise as independent rulers rather than underlings of their Pak paymasters and form an inclusive Govt that represents a broader representation of the country’s deep divide
